Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said Rajya Sabha Chairman and Vice President C P Radhakrishnan’s rise from a humble background to the office of Vice President reflects the true strength of India’s democracy.
Speaking at the start of the Winter session of Parliament, the Prime Minister expressed confidence that Radhakrishnan’s experience and guidance would further strengthen parliamentary functioning.
The Winter Session is the first Parliament session Radhakrishnan is presiding over as chairman of the Upper House. Radhakrishnan was elected India’s 15th Vice President in September, becoming the ex officio chairman of the Rajya Sabha.
“I congratulate you, and I am confident that every member of this House will honour its traditions and uphold your dignity as well,” Modi said.
“Politics has been only one part of your journey - service to society has been your central mission from youth until now. Your personality reflects service, dedication, and patience,” the Prime Minister added.
PM Modi recalled two incidents that influenced Radhakrishnan’s character—escaping drowning at a temple as a child and surviving a bomb blast in Coimbatore during former Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani’s yatra.
He also recounted how the Vice President decided to give up non-vegetarian food during a visit to Kashi.
“I’m not saying those who eat non-vegetarian food are bad, but as the MP from Varanasi, I acknowledge this gesture warmly,” Modi said.
Stating that Radhakrishnan displayed strong leadership qualities since his youth days, Modi said during the Emergency, he fought “as a true soldier of democracy”.
“Today is a proud moment for all of us. Your journey inspires the entire nation. I once again congratulate you,” the Prime Minister said.
