The first astronomical observatory in Eastern India has been inaugurated in Garpanchkot Hills in West Bengal’s Purulia district.
Located at an altitude of 600 meters above ground level, the observatory is set up by the S N Bose Centre for Basic Sciences, an autonomous institute of the Department of Science and Technology. The observatory is equipped with a 14-inch diameter telescope and soon a 1-metre diameter telescope will soon be installed. It will help in scientific observations of astronomical objects, training students in handling telescopes and recording data.
