10th National Handloom Day celebrated in Srinagar

The Weavers Service Centre, Srinagar, in collaboration with the Directorate of Handicrafts and Handloom, Kashmir, on Wednesday celebrated the 10th National Handloom Day in Srinagar.
An official spokesperson said Commissioner Secretary Industries and Commerce, Vikramjit Singh, who was chief guest on the occasion said the day focuses on the contribution of the handloom sector towards socio-economic development and increase in the income of weavers.
Singh said the National Handloom Day aims to generate awareness about the importance of the handloom industry and its contribution to the socio-economic development of the country.
The officer said the government has launched many schemes for the welfare of the weaver community and asked the officials concerned to make principal stakeholders aware about the various schemes so that they are able to avail the benefits envisaged under these programmes.
He also visited the stalls on which handloom products were put on display by the weavers from all across the Kashmir Division.
The Director, Handicrafts and Handloom Kashmir, Mahmood Ahmad Shah, said Kashmiri shawls and carpets are world famous due to their finesse and uniqueness of style and quality.
He said weavers in Kashmir have worked really hard to keep this craft alive and it is a recognition of their efforts that UNESCO picked Srinagar as "Creative City" and recently recognised as World Craft City by the World Craft Council.
