The Indian Army and Police launched a joint operation based on intelligence input about the presence of militants at Alishahpur, Shopian, during the intervening night of October 9 and October 10.

“Two LeT militants were killed in Shopian,” Army’s Srinagar-based strategic Chinar Corps said in a statement here.

The security forces cordoned off the area to conduct a search operation, and at approximately 1:00 am, the militants initiated gunfire, leading to an exchange of fire and killing of the two militants, Army said.

The slain militants have been identified as Morifat Maqbool and Jazim Farooq, both affiliated with the LeT.

The Army said Farooq alias Abrar was involved in killing of Sanjay Sharma a Kashmiri Pandit in Pulwama on February 26. Two AK Series rifles, one pistol and other war like stores have been recovered, it said.

The Army said the incident has brought to fore the nefarious designs of Pakistan in supporting terrorists and trying to disrupt peace and development in Kashmir.
