Srinagar, June 30

Two militants were killed in an encounter in Anantnag district on Tuesday, police said.

This is the second gunfight in the district since Monday. Three militants were killed at Khulchohar on Monday.

The gunfight ensued at Wanghama when security forces were carrying out a search operation.

"During the search operation, the hiding militants fired at the search party. The fire was retaliated leading to an encounter. Two militants were killed," a security official said, adding that the operation is under way.

The identity of the militants could not be established immediately.

Meanwhile, Pakistan violated ceasefire in Nowgam sector in Kupwara district on Tuesday morning.

The Army said Pakistan initiated an unprovoked ceasefire violation along the LoC in Nowgam by firing mortars and other weapons.

"Befitting response is being given," the Army said.

There was no report of any injuries in the shelling.
