28 houses in Ramban damaged by landslide

The district administration acted quickly and succeeded in saving the lives of around 120 persons of Dalwas village in Ramban district on Sunday after 28 houses were damaged in a landslide.

A teams of officials along with rescue teams from the police and paramilitary forces rushed to the mountainous village, located along the Jammu-Srinagar national highway, on Saturday after reports of a massive landslide and sinking of land. The landslide rendered 120 persons homeless.

Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC), Ramban, Ashok Sharma said, “The land started sinking on Saturday evening and continued till Sunday. We took a decision to shift around 120 people of the village to safer places.”

“The villagers managed to collect only their valuable items from their homes. We have shifted them to nearby schools and panchayat ghars keeping social distancing in mind. We have also provided them ration,” the ADC said.

“As many as 28 houses have been damaged completely and the administration has been thinking about the alternatives to rehabilitate these people. The district administration is also making all necessary arrangements for the affected families,” the official said.

Meanwhile, hundreds of Kashmir-bound trucks carrying essentials are stranded on the highway since Friday afternoon after heavy rain triggered landslides and shooting stones from the hillocks at nearly a dozen places between Chanderkote and Banihal.
