Five members of a family died of asphyxiation in Srinagar late on Sunday evening, according to officials.

A couple and its three children, hailing from Uri area of Baramulla district, were found dead inside their rented accommodation in the Pandrethan area of Srinagar.

The neighbours informed authorities after they noticed no activity from family during the day. Preliminary investigations revealed the family died due to asphyxiation, the officials said.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed profound grief and sorrow over the tragic incident. While praying for the departed souls, the Chief Minister urged people to “exercise utmost caution while using heating gadgets during the harsh winter months.”

He emphasised the importance of adhering to government-issued advisories on the safe use of heating equipment to prevent such tragic incidents.

Lt Governor Manoj Sinha and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq have also expressed grief over the loss of lives.
