Adopt technology to combat cyber threats across border, L-G tells police

Lieutenant Governor (L-G) Manoj Sinha on Tuesday urged police officials to adopt innovative tools to enhance their capabilities in tackling cross-border cyber threats.

Speaking at the passing-out parade of Probationer Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs) at the Police Academy in Udhampur, the L-G highlighted the need to address the growing concerns of disinformation being spread from across the border, which is facilitated by modern-day technology.

“Modern technology such as artificial intelligence tools, have changed the security landscape. Challenges of disinformation and deep fakes remain major concerns,” he said.

The L-G emphasised the importance of utilising technological tools to maintain law and order, remain vigilant, and respond swiftly to challenges. He urged the officers to adopt a proactive approach in policing, moving beyond a reactive stance. “We must anticipate and analyse changes in criminal behaviour to stay one step ahead,” he added.

Congratulating the 61 passing-out officers, L-G Sinha encouraged them to uphold their duties with dedication, integrity, and professionalism. “From today, the nation is entrusting you with the critical responsibility of ensuring internal security, combating terrorism, enforcing the rule of law, and ensuring a safe and secure environment for all,” he said, wishing them success in every mission.

He acknowledged the Jammu and Kashmir Police for their vital role in the nation’s internal security, particularly under challenging circumstances. The L-G noted that the police force was playing a key part in maintaining the integrity of the nation and safeguarding the citizens of the Union Territory.

“Terror-free and fear-free J&K is our resolve. At the operational level, we have improved coordination between police and other security to dismantle the terrorist and separatist ecosystem,” he said.

“Narco-terrorism, social media weaponisation, disinformation campaigns have also emerged as big threats to internal security and harmony in the society. I call upon young police officers to work with new ideas, new tools, and lead the fight against Narco-terrorism, Drug trafficking, cyber-crime and counter radicalisation,” the L-G added.

He emphasised that one more column of prosecution should be added to the achievements of the J&K Police, ensuring that the investigation of every crime reaches its logical conclusion.

“Investigation and prosecution are important weaponries of policing. The responsibility of the police is not limited to just neutralising the terrorists, but also eliminating the divisive elements ,” L-G stated.
