Adviser Kotwal chairs second Road Safety Council meeting

The meeting began with a brief overview provided by Secretary Bhupesh Chaudhary, setting the context for the discussions. This was followed by a detailed presentation from Ladakh Regional Transport Officer (RTO) Mohd Nazir Shiekh who outlined key agenda items. The presentation covered statistical data on road accidents over the past two years, the creation of a Road Accident Victim Fund Scheme, and measures to improve road safety across Ladakh. It also included the implementation of the Government of India’s Hit and Run Scheme 2022 and a review of the report submitted by the District Road Safety Committee, Kargil, regarding accidents in the district. Additionally, the activities conducted during the Long Road Safety Month from January 1 to January 31, 2025, were discussed.

Pawan Kotwal emphasised the need for better road engineering, particularly at hazardous spots and accident-prone areas, to enhance overall road safety. He pointed out that all Community Health Centres (CHCs) and Primary Health Centres (PHCs) serve as the first responding trauma units in case of accidents. Kotwal also directed officials to ensure the installation of emergency numbers and signboards at crucial locations for the safety and awareness of commuters. He stressed the importance of preventing road fatalities and called for proactive measures to minimise accidents.

Further, Kotwal instructed that the signboards should be crafted from stone carvings to support the local artisans of Ladakh. This initiative aims to promote traditional craftsmanship while enhancing the region’s unique cultural identity.

Addressing another safety concern, he highlighted the issue of black ice formation caused by water tankers. He directed that such vehicles take necessary precautions, including using closed water tanks, to prevent water spillage that leads to ice formation on roads, thus reducing the risk of accidents.

The meeting was attended by key officials, including Ladakh Administrative Secretary Bhupesh Chaudhary, Ladakh Deputy Inspector General of Police, Leh Senior Superintendent of Police, Ladakh RTO, Ladakh Director of Health Services, Ladakh Chief Engineer PW(R&B) Department, Kargil Additional Deputy Commissioner, Leh Additional Senior Superintendent of Police, Leh Assistant Regional Transport Officer, and Ladakh Under- Secretary, Transport.
