As the price of onions is reaching the sky, onions from Afghanistan have become the choice of people in Jammu these days. These onions are pinkish in colour and slightly bigger in size, but the main thing that attracts people is their price, as they are 20 per cent less costlier than the Indian onions. While the Indian onion costs Rs 110 in Jammu, the Afghani one costs Rs 80-85 per kg.
ACs a common sight
Many years back, air conditioners (ACs) in houses and shops were not a common sight in Kashmir. However, now, it is common to see ACs at many places. Unfortunately, due to erratic power supply in winter months, people cannot completely depend on ACs and have to keep other options like gas heaters or local ‘kangris’ (fire pots) handy. In case of heavy snowfall, electricity remains shut for days and therefore, ACs give a little respite in winter months.
Illogical statements by politicians
BJP leaders from the UT of J&K are seizing every opportunity to issue statements, be it on national or international issues. While residents of the Jammu region are battling to get basic civic amenities, J&K BJP leaders are busy in countering statements given by Congress leaders in Parliament. Some local BJP leaders do not even hesitate to react to statements given by the Pakistan Prime Minister.
Martial arts gain popularity
Martial arts are gaining popularity at the school level in Jammu. A majority of students are competing in games like judo, taekwondo, wushu, kick boxing. Though events in the disciplines of kho-kho, badminton, kabaddi are also being organised by the school managements, the participation is very less. In the annual sports day celebrations too, martial arts disciplines outnumbered other games. “After martial arts, athletics is another discipline where students are participating in decent numbers. Another reason behind opting martial arts by students is they can learn self-defence techniques too,” a karate instructor said.
