Srinagar, February 6
The auditorium of the All India Radio, Srinagar, came back to life on Thursday after over five years as it hosted the ‘Grand Musical Concert’.
Several popular singers of the Kashmir valley enthralled the audience at the renovated auditorium that was damaged in the devastating floods of September 2014.
Speaking on the occasion, Deputy Director General, All India Radio, Srinagar, P Geetharani said the auditorium had been renovated at a cost of around Rs 3 crore. She thanked the singers who performed on the occasion and said the auditorium would continue to host such programmes in future.
Prominent singers who performed on the occasion included Waheed Jeelani, Shaista Ahmed, Aijaz Rah and Mohsin Dilshad.
Jeelani said the event was held with an aim to promote the Kashmiri music. He said besides senior singers, youngsters were also given a chance to perform. He said they would continue to hold similar programmes in future to promote the Kashmiri music.
A decent number of music fans were present on the occasion. As cultural activities had taken a backseat in the Valley since August 5 last year, when the abrogation of Article 370 threw normal life out of gear, the people present at the concert said such programmes were the need of the hour.
“For the past five months, we have mostly been confined to our homes and the stress levels have increased as a result. Besides providing entertainment, music relieves stress. Programmes of this sort should be organised in future as well,” said Nasrullah, a local.
