Sharma has returned to his home region after postings in Ladakh and Mizoram over the past two to three years. As Census Director, he will oversee preparations for the country’s first-ever digital census.

During the meeting, staff briefed him on pre-test census activities under way in both UTs. Sharma reviewed their expertise in mapping, statistics, finance, administration and census operations to ensure optimal deployment ahead of the main exercise.

He said filling vacancies in the Directorate would be taken up on priority with the Office of the Registrar General of India, to ensure the census in snow-bound areas can be conducted in October 2026 as notified.

Sharma told the staff he had high expectations from the team and was confident they would deliver a landmark performance during the 2026-27 census cycle.
