Aspirants in Jammu and Kashmir protesting against the reservation policy introduced earlier this year under the administration of Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha are urging the Omar Abdullah-led government to take immediate action on issues within the current government’s purview.

On Monday, a large-scale protest was held outside the Chief Minister’s residence in Srinagar, led by National Conference (NC) Lok Sabha MP Ruhullah Mehdi. The demonstration saw participation from leaders of the rival People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the Awami Ittehad Party, headed by jailed leader Engineer Rashid. The protesters are demanding revisions to the controversial reservation policy, which they say adversely impacts aspirants.

“Our core demand is a rational reservation policy. But we are demanding some immediate relief which can be provided by the government and these steps are under their purview,” said Sahil Parray, one of the aspirants. He said that the aspirants wanted the government to halt the recruitments process until the subcommittee comes up with its report.

The Government had previously announced the formation of a three-member sub-panel to address the quota issue.

Sahil also highlighted the implementation of the EWS (EWS) policy.
