Barred from conducting Friday prayers: Mirwaiz
Hurriyat Conference chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq said he was stopped from going to the Jama Masjid for the fourth consecutive Friday.
There was no word from the police on his allegation.
“A police vehicle stationed outside to block the entrance and verbally informed by authorities that will not be allowed to go to Jama Masjid today for Friday sermon and prayers.
“This is the #4thConsecutiveFriday when I am being stopped from going to Jama Masjid, where people in large numbers eagerly await to participate in majlis e waz,” the Mirwaiz said in a post on X.
He said while the authorities have power, “I have patience, and the creators promise” that God is with those who are patient.
“Condemn Authoritarianism!” he added.
Meanwhile, mosque’s management committee expressed resentment against the continued house arrest of its head Mirwaiz by the state government.
Terming it “highly unfortunate”, the Auqaf condemned this act of restricting Mirwaiz from performing his religious and official duties. “Such arbitrary action is being enforced solely through the use of power,” it said.
“On a day when a large number of devotees, despite the harsh winter conditions, had gathered at the historic Jama Masjid from various parts of the Valley to listen to the Mirwaiz’s sermon, the administration’s move not only hurt their sentiments but was also highly regrettable,” stated Anjuman.
