Srinagar: Five drug peddlers have been arrested in Baramulla and Kulgam districts and contraband recovered from their possession, police said on Monday.

In the Baramulla district of north Kashmir, a police party established a checkpoint at Drung crossing and intercepted three suspicious individuals. They were identified as Altaf Ahmad Hajam, Suhail Ahmad Lone and Mudasir Ahmad Lone, all residents of Waniloo Hajibal. During the search, 20 grams of brown sugar-like substance were recovered from their possession, a police spokesperson said.

In Kulgam, acting on inputs, a police party intercepted two suspicious persons at a checkpoint established at Sesman Damjan area of the south Kashmir district, the spokesperson said. Police recovered over 3 kg of poppy straw-like contraband from their possession. The spokesperson identified the two as Nisar Ahmad Dar, a resident of Sesman Bonigam, and Anayat Bashir, a resident of Nassu Badragund.

The police said that all five have been booked under relevant sections of law, and investigations have been initiated.

Teenage boy's body retrieved from river

Jammu: The body of a 15-year-old boy was retrieved from a river in Reasi district on Monday, officials said. 45-year-old Zulfan Bano and her son, Basharat Ahmed, were washed away in flash floods after they slipped into the Sadole nallah in the Mahore area on Sunday night. The woman’s body was recovered last night, officials said. The boy’s body was handed over to his family, they added.

2 gunmen held for opening fire at man in Samba

Jammu: Two gunmen have been arrested for allegedly opening fire at a man, who narrowly escaped unhurt, in Samba district, police said on Monday. The accused have been identified as Rohit Dogra and his associate, Satish Kumar, they said. A written complaint was lodged at Samba police station by Amit Padha of Diani village, stating that Rohit Dogra, along with another person, opened fire on him on Saturday night, they said. Acting on the complaint, a case was registered. Police arrested the main accused, Rohit, and on his disclosure, a pistol was recovered on Monday, they said. His associate, Satish Kumar, was also arrested in the case, they added. Police further recovered a live round from the scene of the crime. Further investigation is underway.

Two held for sacrilege in Poonch district

Jammu: Two people were arrested for their alleged involvement in an act of sacrilege in Kuniyan area of Poonch district, police said on Monday. Police also seized a vehicle used to commit the act, a police spokesperson said. The two were booked under section 299 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with the offense of deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings. A search is also underway to nab other accused, the spokesperson said.
