Jammu: Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Monday met Mareesa Thapa, daughter of Additional Deputy Commissioner Raj Kumar Thapa, who was killed in Pakistani shelling on May 10. Pakistan had started shelling on civilian areas during which Thapa was trying to safeguard the lives of locals when a shell exploded near him.

The L-G also met Thapa’s wife Meenakshi Kundan Thapa at the Raj Bhawan.

Sinha handed over an assurance letter to Thapa’s daughter that she will be appointed as an Assistant Law Officer after completion of her studies.

Meanwhile, in a separate event, the L-G also handed over appointment letters for government jobs to 80 kin of terror victims from Kishtwar, Doda, Ramban Poonch, Rajouri, Samba, Kathua, Udhampur and Reasi.

Woman police officer dies by suicide

Jammu: A woman police officer, who had been battling life-threatening illness and depression, allegedly died by suicide at her residence here, officials said on Monday.

The body of Assistant Sub-inspector (ASI) Kulbir Kour (52) was found hanging from a ceiling fan inside a room of her house at Lower Gadigarh on Sunday evening, they said.

“She was posted at District Police Lines Jammu and was on medical leave for a long time due to a chronic medical condition,” they added.

Preliminary investigation suggests that the officer committed suicide due to depression, they said. The body was handed over to her family for last rites after completion of postmortem and other legal formalities. — PTI

Terrorist aide arrested in Kupwara

Srinagar: Security forces on Monday arrested a terror associate in Kupwara district and recovered a cache of arms and ammunition from him, a police official said.

Forces launched a cordon and search operation at Marsary village in Chowkibal area of Kralpora in north Kashmir after specific intelligence inputs, he said, adding that Wali Mohammad Mir, resident of Marsary village, was apprehended during the operation.

Upon search, a huge cache of arms and ammunition was recovered from his possession, which included an AK-56 rifle, three AK-56 rifle magazines, 1,150 rounds of AK-56 ammunition, and 17 UBGL (under barrel grenade launcher) grenades, the official said. Preliminary investigations reveal that Mir was working as an associate for proscribed terror outfits and was involved in facilitating the movement of arms and ammunition to active terrorists in the area, he said. — PTI
