Union Minister Jitendra Singh recently emphasised the potential of the Chattergala tunnel, which will link Doda and Bhaderwah with Lakhanpur via Basohli-Bani. Describing the tunnel as a “game changer,” Singh highlighted its role in providing all-weather connectivity to the region, thereby boosting tourism, revenue and employment opportunities for local youth.

The Chattergala tunnel, a crucial part of the Viksit Bharat initiative, is expected to cost over Rs 17,000 crore, with the tunnel alone accounting for Rs 4,000 crore. The project aims to significantly reduce travel time between Doda and Bhaderwah, cutting it down to just 4 to 5 hours.

Singh, addressing the District Development Coordination and Monitoring Committee Meeting (DISHA), noted that Doda, once underdeveloped for decades, was now being integrated into a comprehensive network of highways, enhancing connectivity in remote areas. He stressed the need for the completion of key projects, including the Khellani tunnel and the Goha-Marmat Highway, which were set to further improve the region’s infrastructure.

Urging the authorities to accelerate the implementation of these projects, Singh emphasised the importance of avoiding fund lapses and ensuring public participation in developmental activities through the Jan Bhagidari (people’s participation) framework for effective execution.

The Union Minister also reiterated the government’s commitment to the district’s overall growth, underscoring the significance of schemes like Ayushman Bharat for senior citizens above 75 and the PM Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, which provides household solar plants. He proposed hosting another lavender festival next year to promote local cultivation and enhance tourism in Bhaderwah, which had gained popularity as a key tourist destination.

The meeting also saw discussions on various ongoing development initiatives, including the Jal Jeevan Mission, NABARD projects, and the PMGSY scheme. Deputy Commissioner Harvinder Singh provided a detailed overview of the district’s progress, addressing challenges related to forest clearances and compensation issues for road construction under PMGSY.
