The Congress launched a scathing attack on the government for not fulfilling the promises made to sarpanches and panches with regard to Panchayati Raj institutions.

The Block Development Council (BDC) chairmen of the Congress of Doda and Kishtwar districts termed the promises made by the government a hoax.

Around 15 BDC chairmen of the Congress from Doda, Bhaderwah and Inderwal Assembly constituencies were felicitated by former minister and senior Congress leader Ghulam Mohammad Saroori.

Speaking on the occasion, the BDC chairmen attacked the government and termed bureaucracy the biggest hurdle in strengthening Panchayati Raj institutions at grass-roots level in J&K.

They said the recently held Back to Village-Phase II was a cruel joke with people living in far-flung areas of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir as the government had failed to address the issues raised by them during the Phase-I.

“The government claimed that Rs 5 crore was kept at the disposal of every Deputy Commissioner but nobody knows where the said amount was spent,” they said.
