National Conference (NC) president Farooq Abdullah on Friday said the ruling party has made significant progress in its first year in power, despite operating within the Union Territory framework where the elected government has “limited powers.”
Speaking at an event marking the 120th birth anniversary of NC founder Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah, he said that while much more needs to be done, the achievements made so far are visible on the ground.
“Our opponents will always point out what has not been done, but they will not acknowledge what has been accomplished,” Abdullah said. He added that one of the major changes over the past year is that people can “move around freely now, and speak freely.”
The NC chief also voiced disappointment over certain party leaders criticising the party and the government. “For God’s sake, tell me what more could have been done in one year, when everything is up to the Lieutenant Governor? Despite that, our endeavour has been to ease the sufferings of the people. The assembly members visit every corner and try to address people’s problems—don’t you see that?” he said.
Describing the political situation as challenging, Abdullah said the party is “treading a path like walking on a razor’s edge.” He said NC legislators are working tirelessly, but people often expect instant results. “We still have four more years. God willing, you will see the transformation in your areas during this period,” he told party workers.
Calling for generational change in politics, Abdullah said that the time has come to introduce “young and educated faces.” With Municipal and Panchayat elections approaching, he urged the youth to step forward and take charge, stressing that unity within the party was essential for strengthening both the organisation and the government.
On the occasion of Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah’s birth anniversary, senior party leaders paid rich tributes to the founder, describing him as a visionary statesman, fearless mass leader, and champion of people’s rights and dignity. According to an NC statement, speakers recalled Sheikh Abdullah’s pivotal role as the architect of modern Jammu & Kashmir and the voice of its marginalised communities.
The statement highlighted his transformative policies, including the landmark land-to-the-tiller reform, which reshaped the region’s socio-economic landscape and uplifted countless families from poverty and exploitation. His politics, firmly rooted in public welfare, was described as unmatched in moral and ideological depth.
Reaffirming their commitment to his ideals and legacy, the party said Sheikh Abdullah’s vision continues to guide its efforts to safeguard the rights, identity and democratic aspirations of the people. “At a time of political uncertainty, his teachings remain a beacon of hope, reminding the cadre of the importance of resilience, truth and collective strength,” the statement added.
