A massive fire broke out late Saturday evening in Sonamarg, damaging at least 50 structures, predominantly shops, and sparking concerns among locals over the absence of a fire brigade in the area.

The fire, which began at a hotel in Sonamarg’s main market, quickly spread to nearby shops and other structures, reducing them to ashes. At least 25 structures were completely destroyed, while another 25 sustained partial damage.

CM Omar Abdullah expressed his sorrow over the devastating incident, stating, “Deeply saddened by the devastating fire incident in the Sonamarg market. My office is in constant touch with the local administration to ensure all possible assistance reaches those in need. My thoughts and prayers are with the affected families and businesses.”

Locals have raised alarms over the lack of fire-fighting resources in the area. Residents claimed that the fire could have been controlled earlier had firefighters been available. Upon noticing the flames, shopkeepers rushed to safety after the alarm was sounded.

Kangan MLA Mian Mehar Ali, criticised the lack of a fire brigade presence. He said, “This happened only because there is no vehicle of fire service nearby. As soon as I became MLA, local traders came to me and urged that there should be a fire tender stationed in the area.” The MLA also accused the Sonamarg Development Authority of failing to address the issue of fire tender availability.

Traders pointed out that this was not the first fire incident in the area. In 2016, another blaze devastated shops, but no fire tenders were stationed nearby even then.

Meanwhile, Kashmir Divisional Commissioner Vijay Kumar Bidhuri and Ganderbal Deputy Commissioner Jatin Kishore visited Sonamarg on Sunday to assess the damage caused by the fire.

During their visit, they engaged with the Sonamarg Shopkeeper Association.

The market association raised several demands, including immediate financial aid and the establishment of a fire service station in Sonamarg.

Bidhuri directed the authorities to station a fire tender at the Youth Hostel Sonamarg and near the Sonamarg Tunnel. Furthermore, Bidhuri emphasised the importance of conducting a Fire Safety Audit for all establishments in Sonamarg.
