Drill held at Srinagar airport to assess winter preparedness

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) on Saturday conducted a dry run and preparedness exercise at Srinagar International Airport to assess operational readiness ahead of the winter and snow season, officials said.

An Airports Authority of India spokesperson said the exercise focused on preparedness for fog and low-visibility conditions, which frequently disrupt flight operations during winter.

The drill was conducted jointly by AAI, airline airport managers, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), ground handling agencies (GHAs), the medical inspection unit and other concerned stakeholders.

“The objective was to evaluate overall preparedness, inter-agency coordination and the functionality of passenger and operational facilities during adverse weather conditions,” the spokesperson said.

As part of the exercise, heating arrangements inside the terminal building were checked for adequacy and proper functioning. Passenger waiting areas, lounges and circulation spaces were inspected to ensure comfort during cold weather, while illumination levels inside the terminal were also verified.

Provision of additional manpower and adequate stock to maintain terminal cleanliness and washroom facilities during peak winter operations was reviewed, the spokesperson said.

Regarding fog and low-visibility preparedness, operational protocols were assessed and coordination mechanisms between air traffic control (ATC), airlines, apron control and terminal operations were verified. Passenger facilitation arrangements during flight delays, diversions and cancellations were also reviewed.

On safety and security, the CISF’s preparedness to manage passenger flow during congestion caused by weather disruptions was assessed. Emergency response mechanisms and access routes were checked, while surveillance systems and access control arrangements were reviewed for functionality.

The spokesperson said coordination between airside operations and terminal management during adverse weather conditions was discussed, and the availability of manpower and equipment for winter operations was reviewed.

“All stakeholders have been instructed to maintain a heightened state of readiness throughout the winter season. Airlines have also been advised to proactively coordinate with passengers regarding flight status and disruptions,” he said.

The spokesperson added that the exercise was conducted successfully and provided assurance of the airport’s preparedness for the upcoming winter, snow and fog season.

“Continuous monitoring and periodic review of arrangements have been advised to ensure sustained operational efficiency and passenger comfort during adverse weather conditions,” he said.
