The MeT Srinagar predicted isolated rains on January 24. Kashmir is in the grip of severe cold during the harshest 40-day winter period, known as “Chilla-i-Kalan,” which commenced on December 21 and will conclude on January 31.

While the minimum temperature during the night dropped to minus 6°C in Konibal, the daytime temperature is hovering 4 to 5 degrees above normal. However, the weatherman says similar temperature patterns were observed in the winters of 2018 and 2014. They say the Valley is witnessing these long dry spells every five to six years. Jammu and Kashmir have recorded a deficit in precipitation for both December and January, with most plains experiencing minimal snowfall.
