Dy CM inaugurates JKI sale mela, calls for promotion of indigenous handicrafts
Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Kumar Choudhary today highlighted the importance of promoting Jammu and Kashmir’s indigenous handicrafts both nationally and internationally.
“J&K is blessed with a rich variety of indigenous handicrafts that have already carved a niche in national and international markets. The key now is to enhance their visibility through sustained marketing and promotion. This will not only expand the market for these products but also boost the local economy and create job opportunities,” the Dy CM said.
He made these remarks while addressing a gathering after inaugurating the Jammu and Kashmir Industries (JKI) Sale Mela, which showcases a wide array of wool and silk products.
The event, organised by JKI, was attended by several senior officials, including Smitha Sethi, Secretary in the Industries and Commerce Department; Arun Kumar Manhas, Director of Industries and Commerce Jammu; Vikram Gupta, Managing Director of Jammu and Kashmir Industries; Pawan Kumar Sharma, Managing Director of Jammu and Kashmir Minerals, and other senior officers.
The Dy CM commended JKI for organising the event, noting that the government remains committed to supporting local industries. “This Sale Mela is a showcase of the extraordinary talent of JKI workers and the rich heritage of Jammu and Kashmir, particularly in relation to Mulberry Silk. The government is focused on promoting local crafts, ensuring sustainable livelihoods for our sheep wool rearers and artisans, and expanding their market reach,” he said.
Choudhary also encouraged JKI to explore the possibility of organising similar events in other prominent locations within and outside J&K to further promote the region’s heritage products.
The Sale Mela, which has already seen a positive response from the employees of the Civil Secretariat, will continue for the next 10 days, offering exclusive discounts and special promotions to encourage public participation.
