Despite unprecedented challenges posed by the spread of the Covid pandemic and consequent lockdowns, over 77 per cent students today qualified the Class XII exams in the summer zone, results of which were declared by the Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education (JKBOSE).
Girls again proved their mettle and outshone boys by getting a pass percentage of 82, whereas boys stood at 73 per cent. A total of 33,779 candidates appeared in the examination, which was conducted at 316 centres, out of which 26,139 cleared these, constituting 77.38 per cent of the total examinees.
The significant part of the result was the better performance of government-run schools as they recorded an increase of 17.30 per cent pass percentage against 11.93 per cent of private schools. At least 44 students of government schools, especially in rural areas, also made it to the merit lists in different streams. In the cut-throat competition, the first position in science stream was shared by five students with 98.6 per cent marks, including Anshul Thakur from Government Model Higher Secondary School, Basohli, Kritika Sharma of SP Higher Secondary School, Jammu, Reeba Shamim Malik of International Higher Secondary School, Rajouri, Stanzin Sharab of Government Girls Higher Secondary School (GGHSS,) Mubarak Mandi, and Tania Gupta of the GGHSS, Udhampur. A total of 81 students were in the top 10 positions in the science stream.
In the commerce stream, Kriti from Shiksha Niketan Higher Secondary School topped the merit list with 98.4 per cent, while Tanisha Jain of the GHSS, Mubarak Mandi, exclled in home science with 85.8 per cent marks.
Ritika Sharma of Shiksha Niketen Higher Secondary School, Jeevan Nagar, Jammu, secured first position in the arts stream with 99 per cent marks. “The examination in some subjects could not be held due to the Covid pandemic. In the interest of tstudents, JKBOSE awarded marks according to the ‘proportionate marks scheme’ in the papers that were not held,” a board official said.
