Union Minister Jitendra Singh on Thursday tore into the political parties in the UT, claiming that the “protagonists of the Article 370 were its greatest abusers”.

In a BJP workshop at Patnitop, Singh said, “In 1975 when Indira Gandhi imposed Emergency and brought in constitutional amendment to extend the term of the Lok Sabha and Assemblies from five years to six years, the then J&K CM Sheikh Abdullah immediately adopted it without caring for Article 370. But when the same amendment was reversed in 1977, Sheikh Abdullah used the alibi of special status to ensure that the Assembly term was not reverted back to five years. This anomaly among others got corrected only after its abrogation.”

The minister said the abrogation increased the pace of development works.
