Human rights lawyer Mir Shafkat dies

Prominent human rights lawyer of Kashmir Mir Shafkat Hussain passed away today after brief illness.
He died at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, at 10.30 am. He was admitted to AIIMS three days ago and had been operated upon by doctors for lung disease.
He was 54 and had joined the J&K High Court in 1990.
Shafkat, who specialised in habeas corpus matters and trials related to political prisoners, has to his credit filing around 10,000 habeas corpus petitions challenging the Public Safety Act detention before the High Court in his entire career spanning over 30 years.
