Congress and Independent councillors of the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) today demanded immediate implementation of the 74rd Amendment to the Indian Constitution in Jammu and Kashmir.

“After the revocation of Article 370 and notification of the Reorganisation Act on August 5 last year, the Constitution of India was applicable to J&K UT. However, the 73rd and 74th constitutional amendments have not been implemented even after the lapse of almost a year. Many assurances were given by the Central and UT administration to implement these amendments but practically nothing has been done so far,” Sham Lal Basson, a councillor of Ward 48 said.

Flanked by other councillors, Basson said the JMC had failed to convene even a single general house meeting after February 28.

“All the councillors, irrespective of political affiliations, want regular general house meetings. The Mayor failed to convene a general house meeting. No doubt social distancing is important during the Covid-19 pandemic but the meetings are possible through videoconferencing, Zoom and Webinar,” he suggested.
