Celebration of the Ladakhi New Year Losar began in the Union Territory with festive and traditional fervour on Friday.
The celebration will last for three to nine days. Losar is a social and cultural festival, celebrated according to the Buddhist lunar calendar in the first day of the eleventh month of the lunar calendar correlating to a date in the Gregorian calendar.
The century-old celebration of festival was marked with preparation of symbolic meals and offerings to Gods and Goddesses. People decorate their dinning walls of the houses with lucky signs for the prosperous New Year and timely snow and rain for good crops.
In an official function, Lieutenant-Governor Radha Krishna Mathur participated in the New Year celebrations at Chowkhang Vihara.
He said, “Losar marks the beginning of a new year, and with only two months old as a Union Territory, Ladakh is ready for a new era.”
He greeted the people of Ladakh on Losar and spoke highly of their common nature of striving together, their deep faith in communal harmony, sense of giving back to society and a genuine smile on their faces.
“Everyone needs to work together in creating a better future for the coming generation. It is the right time to grab the opportunity to shape Ladakh and make it socially strong, culturally rich, economically and ecologically prosperous,” the L-G added.
