Union Minister of State for Finance and Corporate Affairs and former president of Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Anurag Thakur on Wednesday visited the upgraded Maulana Azad (MA) Stadium here.
J&K Sports Council secretary Naseem Javed Choudhary along with other staff and representatives of the J&K Cricket Association (JKCA) were present at the stadium. They briefed Anurag about the ongoing work at the best stadium.
The former BCCI president was also informed about the MoU between the autonomous sports body of J&K and the BCCI. Request was also made to hold international and IPL matches there in future.
Sources said Anurag expressed satisfaction over the condition of the stadium. He said the stadium was in a much better condition now. They said the minister also suggested various technical improvements and the same would be put forward to the J&K Sports Council secretary.
Pertinently, Lt-Governor Girish Chander Murmu had inaugurated the upgraded/renovated MA Stadium on January 15, 2020. The stadium has been constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 42.17 crore as per the BCCI norms. The project was undertaken under the Prime Minister’s Development Package and was executed by the National Projects Construction Corporation. The seating capacity of the stadium is around 20,000.
