A 37-year-old man was shot dead by assailants at the busy Jewel Chowk here on Tuesday afternoon when he was travelling in his SUV. Three youths intercepted the vehicle and fired four rounds at the victim, identified as Sumit Jandiyal, a resident of Vijaypur. The incident is allegedly result of a gang war.

The crime took place close to the MA Stadium that is the venue of the Republic Day celebrations and has been under tight security cover of J&K Police for the past many days.

Officials said as soon as Sumit reached Jewel Chowk, the attackers started shooting at his SUV. Sumit was immediately rushed to the hospital where he succumbed to the bullet wounds. The shooters managed to escape from the spot.

“Reports indicated that one person has been seriously injured. The injured individual was promptly transported to GMC Jammu by a police team from Nowabad, where he later on succumbed to his injuries. An investigation has been initiated into the incident, and further details will be provided later,” a police statement said.

A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to nab those involved in the shooting.
