Jammu MC cracks down on unregistered pet sellers

Taking strict action against the unregistered pet and bird shops in Jammu city, the Municipal Corporation has served notices to these establishments.

JMC Commissioner Devansh Yadav issued directions to the staff after which a drive has been launched against unregistered pet and bird sellers operating illegally within the city.

Led by Animal Welfare Officer Gaurav Chowdhary, JMC teams, comprising Dr Divya and officials of the Enforcement Wing conducted surprise inspections at multiple locations including Gandhi Nagar, Nanak Nagar, Railway Station area and Trikuta Nagar.

During the inspection, few shopkeepers were found selling fishes and birds without obtaining the mandatory registration or licenses. Despite multiple notices and warnings previously issued by the Corporation, many traders have continued to flout regulations, an official informed.

Chowdhary informed that a total of 20 shops have been inspected so far and notices have been served to these violators who are operating without proper authorisation, putting animal welfare and public health at risk. As part of the ongoing enforcement drive, one shop was sealed today in Gandhi Nagar.

Chowdhary emphasised that strict action will continue against unregistered shops unless they comply with the licensing norms. “The facility for registration is available at the office of the Animal Welfare Officer and all traders involved in the sale of pet animals are advised to get registered at the earliest to avoid legal action,” the official said.
