J&K gears up for first Republic Day under elected govt since Article 370 abrogation
In the first Republic Day celebration following the formation of an elected government since the abrogation of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status in 2019, the Union Territory’s Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha, will preside over the main function in Jammu, while Chief Minister Omar Abdullah will serve as the chief guest.
According to officials, five cabinet ministers will also oversee celebrations and take the salute at functions held in five district headquarters. Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary will preside over the function in Srinagar; Sakeena Itoo in Anantnag; Javed Ahmad Rana in Udhampur, Jammu; Javid Ahmad Dar in Baramulla; and Satish Sharma in Kathua.
The government has also directed that District Development Council (DDC) chairpersons will preside over functions at their respective headquarters. Similarly, sub-divisional magistrates will oversee events at sub-divisional headquarters, while tehsildars or senior-most officers will preside at tehsil, block, and municipal levels.
Officials have stated that all necessary arrangements are being made to ensure the peaceful execution of these events. Directions have already been issued to create a celebratory atmosphere across the Union Territory, especially in the twin cities of Jammu and Srinagar.
Higher authorities have instructed the district administrations to illuminate landmark sites and prominent government buildings. They have also emphasised making adequate transport and seating arrangements for different schoolchildren attending the events.
The main functions will be broadcast live through regional units of Doordarshan and All India Radio.
In Srinagar, the main event will take place at Bakshi Stadium. Deputy Commissioner Bilal Mohi-Ud-Din Bhat has instructed officials to make all necessary arrangements. He has also emphasised preparedness for potential snowfall, rain, or waterlogging.
