The Jammu and Kashmir government announced on Wednesday that it will provide additional foodgrains free of cost to all Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) households under the Public Distribution System (PDS). Chief Minister Omar Abdullah stated, “In a major pro-people decision, fulfilling the promise made in Budget 2025-26, the government will now provide additional foodgrains free of cost to all AAY households under PDS. Each beneficiary will receive up to 10 kg of foodgrains, ensuring enhanced food security for our most vulnerable families.”

The Department of Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs has issued an order sanctioning the distribution of additional food grains to augment the monthly food requirements of AAY households. Under the revised allocation, AAY households with up to three members will continue to receive 35 kg of foodgrains.

However, households with four members will now receive an additional 5 kg, bringing their total to 40 kg. Similarly, households with five members will get 15 kg extra (total 50 kg), while those with six members will receive 25 kg additional grains (total 60 kg). The allocation increases proportionally, with a 10-member household eligible for up to 65 kg of free foodgrains.

Earlier, the government had set a uniform allocation of 35 kg per AAY household. The new initiative aims to ensure improved food security for larger families under the scheme.
