A day after 24-year-old man, who was on interim bail in POSCO case, allegedly committed suicide by jumping from Tawi bridge, the police on Wednesday ordered a high-level inquiry into the incident.
“We are deeply saddened by the unfortunate incident. A high-level enquiry into the matter to ascertain the facts and circumstances of the case headed by SP City North has been ordered. The responsible persons will be strictly dealt with under the law,” a police spokesperson said here.
The spokesperson said an FIR Under Section 309 IPC has already been registered at Nowabad police station and an investigation is under progress.
On Tuesday, the man identified as Akshay Kumar had allegedly jumped from the bridge, alleging harassment in the hands of the police and the family of a girl.
According to the deceased’s lawyer, Y M Khan, the man was on interim bail since March 13 and his bail was rejected a few days back and the court ordered his arrest.
A video, shot by the deceased before allegedly ending his life, has gone viral in social media wherein he alleged that the Court directed the police to get his COVID test done before lodging him into the jail.
“In the video, he disclosed that he produced himself produced before the police but the concerned SHO of police station Janipur, allegedly harassed him and sent for COVID19 test, which was not conducted by hospital staff without police presence,” the lawyer said
Meanwhile, the Police and SDRF teams have launched an operation to recover his body from the flooded river waters.
