Kashmir rail link with rest of the country to boost tourism: CM
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday sought to allay concerns regarding the potential negative impact of the direct rail link between the Kashmir valley and the rest of the country. He assured that the Jammu region would benefit from the new rail line, particularly in terms of tourism and trade.
Speaking at an event marking the creation of a separate railway division in Jammu, Omar emphasised that the new development would also bring increased employment opportunities to the region.
“Two days ago, we got this good news through media that the trial train reached Katra from Srinagar. It is expected that very soon, the Prime Minister will inaugurate this section which will complete the railway line and immensely benefit the people of the region,” Omar said.
He said there are some concerns among the people related to the rail service, especially in Jammu.
He acknowledged that there were some concerns in Jammu regarding the rail service, particularly the fear that it could impact the region negatively, as seen in Pathankot when the rail service extended from Jammu. However, Omar reassured the people of Jammu that the rail service to Kashmir would not have a similar effect. “Rather, we assure that Jammu will benefit from it as it will enhance trade and tourism, while increasing travel between the two regions,” he stated.
Omar also commended PM Narendra Modi for his efforts to improve connectivity and road networks in J&K.
