Traders in Katra — the basecamp for the Vaishno Devi pilgrimage — have expressed serious concern over the delay in repair work of railway tracks in Jammu region, saying the disruption is affecting both pilgrims and the local economy.

The Chamber of Tourism, Trade and Industry Katra (CTTIK) has accused the Railways of adopting a “lacklustre approach” towards restoring damaged railway infrastructure in the Jammu region, which suffered extensive damage due to heavy rains and flooding in August.

Train services on several routes were suspended after portions of the track were washed away. While some services have since been restored, multiple trains remain non-operational, causing mounting losses to Katra’s tourism-driven businesses.

“Pilgrims who had booked train tickets for September and October saw their journeys cancelled at the last moment, causing huge inconvenience and financial loss. The same trend continues for November, leaving thousands of devotees uncertain about their travel plans,” said Raj Kumar, president of the CTTIK.

He added that special train permissions for pilgrim groups are reportedly not being granted, further complicating travel arrangements to the holy town. “Despite two months having passed, the situation remains largely unresolved,” he said.

Meanwhile, Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), Jammu, Vivek Kumar, conducted a detailed inspection of the Jammu–Katra rail section to assess the operational status and review infrastructure conditions for future development.

He was accompanied by Additional Divisional Manager Akshay Kumar Marantu, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Uchit Singhal, Senior Divisional Operations Manager Arish Bansal, and other senior officials. The team inspected key stations including Bajalta, Sangar, Manwal, and Shaheed Captain Tushar Mahajan.

During the inspection, the DRM reviewed railway tracks, tunnels, bridges, signaling systems, platforms, and passenger amenities, with a focus on structural safety and preparedness for harsh winter conditions.

A railway spokesperson said, “Railway tunnels and bridges on the section were inspected to ensure structural stability and track safety.”

DRM Vivek Kumar reaffirmed the department’s commitment to passenger safety. “Passenger safety is our top priority. This comprehensive inspection is part of our regular process to ensure the strength and reliability of our infrastructure,” he said.

He added that the inspection drive aimed to ensure the safe and reliable operation of rail services in the Jammu–Katra section during the upcoming winter season.
