Keep Zojila open for traffic: CEC to officials

Chief Executive Councillor (CEC), LAHDC, Kargil, Mohd Jaffer Akhoon on Saturday chaired a high-level meeting to review the preparedness for snow clearance in Kargil and along the Zojila Axis.

During the meeting, the CEC expressed his gratitude to Vijayak and the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) for their relentless efforts in ensuring snow clearance day and night, which has significantly facilitated public movement.

A spokesperson in a statement said Akhoon informed that snow clearance jurisdiction extends to India Gate and instructed the concerned departments to prioritise clearing snow in areas such as Batalik-Humbutingla, Chiktan, Wakha, Zanskar, Lankarchey Thangboo, Purtikchey, Tangole-Parkachik, and other snow-affected areas.

He further directed the General Manager, NHIDCL, to ensure the availability of sand particularly 0-6 km and other badly affected areas for enhanced safety and early preparations to handle any snow clearance.

Highlighting the importance of Zojila Pass, the CEC emphasised that it is the lifeline for the people of Ladakh. “Efforts are underway to keep the pass open for the convenience of the public,” he added.

The Border Roads Organisation officer informed that all efforts are being made to keep Zojila operational, the spokesperson said.

Akhoon also instructed BRO to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the construction of a lavatory facility for men and women at India Gate hill-locked side.

The CEC also added that proactive measures are being taken by the Hill Council to mitigate the challenges posed by harsh winters and ensure smooth connectivity for the people of Kargil.

“Additionally, the CEC also directed the Executive Officer, Municipal Committee Kargil, and other concerned officers to ensure timely snow clearance in the coming days to facilitate public convenience,” the spokesperson said.

The Deputy Commissioner extended support by offering machinery from the Mechanical Department, if required, to maximise the efficiency of snow clearance operations, the statement noted.
