In a significant development for the agricultural economy of Jammu and Kashmir, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Monday flagged off the first-ever cargo parcel train from the Kashmir Valley to Delhi. The service is expected to offer a cheaper and more reliable mode of transportation for perishable goods—especially apples—to key terminal markets across the country.

The cargo train was flagged off from Nowgam Railway Station and is scheduled to arrive in Adarsh Nagar, Delhi, on Tuesday morning.

The move has been widely welcomed by fruit growers, who believe this new rail service could serve as an effective alternative to traditional road transport, which is often disrupted due to landslides and poor weather—causing significant losses, particularly during the apple harvest season.

On Monday morning, eight parcel van coaches (each with a capacity of 23 tonnes) began the journey from Budgam Railway Station to Delhi. J&K Agriculture Minister Javid Ahmad Dar and top UT and railway personnel were also present at the inauguration.

Speaking at the launch, L-G Manoj Sinha said the new rail service would significantly reduce transit time and enhance income opportunities for thousands of farmers. “This is a big step forward for apple growers in the Union Territory. It will provide a faster and more economical transportation option, strengthen market linkages, and ultimately improve the lives and livelihoods of our farmers,” he said.

He also noted that frequent disruptions on the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway, due to the region’s challenging topography and heavy rainfall, have caused repeated losses to fruit growers. The new daily freight train service will ensure uninterrupted transport of apples and other perishable goods.

Divisional Railway Manager (Jammu Division) Vivek Kumar called it a “historic achievement” and said the Railways is proud to play a crucial role in the region’s development. “This new parcel cargo train is a testament to our commitment to supporting the economic growth of the nation,” he added.

According to railway officials, the Joint Parcel Product – Rapid Cargo Service (JPP-RCC) will operate daily and is suitable for all parcel commodities. The eight-coach train, with a total carrying capacity of around 180 tonnes, will depart Budgam at 6:15 am, make a scheduled stop at Bari Brahmana, Jammu, from 3 pm to 4:30 pm, and reach Adarsh Nagar, New Delhi, by 5:30 am the next day.
