Ladakh varsity to be high-class institution, says L-G Mathur

At first University Council meet, says efforts should be made to gain highest standards in education, curricula

Lieutenant Governor of the Union Territory of Ladakh Radha Krishna Mathur on Friday said the University of Ladakh (UoL), the first institution of higher learning in the arid region, would be a “high-class institution” in Ladakh.

Mathur, who is the Chancellor of the University of Ladakh, said this while chairing the first University Council meet in Leh.

The Lt Governor said: “Our effort should centre on gaining the highest standards in education and curricula of the University of Ladakh.”

Mathur stressed ensuring flexibility in the credit system so as to facilitate students to register for courses of their choice and alter it within the academic course.

“The orientation of research and development among students to promote a process of producing researchers and innovators is yet another important aspect,” he said.

Mathur said the University of Ladakh was fortunate to have C Phunsog, a retired IAS officer, as its first Vice Chancellor.

“This is bound to result in the establishment of a high-class institution in Ladakh,” the Lt Governor said.

On the intervention of the Chairman and Chief Executive Councillor (CEC), Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, Leh, Gyal P Wangyal, the council decided to take up with the University of Kashmir the matter of delay in passing out of batches for 2015 and 2016 and timely passing out of 2017, 2018 and 2019 batches.

The CEC, Kargil Council, Feroz Ahmed Khan, requested the council to conduct the next University Council of the University of Ladakh meeting in Kargil.

Earlier, Vice Chancellor C Phuntsog gave a brief account of the inception of the higher educational institution in Ladakh from 1889 till the creation of the University of Ladakh in 2018.

The meeting deliberated on various issues such as approval of statutes and regulations of the University of Ladakh, budget estimates, building infrastructure, post creation, recruitment and matters of the constituent colleges. The council stressed building winter-ready hostels, college buildings and administrative offices. A decision was also taken regarding improvements in the existing degree colleges.

Registrar of the university Imteaz Kacho conducted the meeting while the Controller of Examinations and Dean, Academic Affairs, of the university Deskyong Namgyal delivered the token of thanks. The Vice Chancellor, Cluster University of Jammu, Prof Anju Bhasin, Vice Chancellor, Cluster University of Srinagar, Prof Sheikh Javed Ahmad, Commissioner Secretary, Ladakh, Rigzin Samphel, Educational and Financial Adviser of the university, former Joint Commissioner, Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Kaneez Fatima, founder, Himalayan Institute of Alternatives, Ladakh, Sonam Wangchuk and principals of various colleges participated in the meeting.
