A firing incident was reported in the Phallian Mandal area on the outskirts of Jammu on Tuesday evening, sparking panic among residents. According to eyewitnesses, a black car, in which two people were seated, came under fire from at least three attackers. The police arrived at the scene soon after, but no casualties were reported in the incident.

This shooting incident adds to the growing law and order concerns in the Jammu region, already alarmed by a series of criminal activities, including the recent theft of Rs 19.50 lakh from a Jammu and Kashmir Bank branch in the remote Kishtwar district. The theft, which took place on Monday, has raised questions about the rising crime rate in the area. Masked thieves broke into the bank branch in Dachan, a mountainous part of Kishtwar, while it was closed and stole the money. The police have formed a special team to investigate the case, reviewing CCTV footage in search of clues.

The theft in Kishtwar follows a number of other high-profile crimes, including the daylight robbery of 1.5 kg of gold from a jewellery shop in Jammu, the murder of a gangster, and a shooting incident involving a gangster and a police party. These criminal activities have intensified concerns about the effectiveness of policing in the region.

Interestingly, these events coincide with the appointment of Bhim Sen Tuti as the new Inspector General of Police (IGP) for the Jammu region. The rising crime rate and increasing drug peddling in the area now present a major challenge for the IGP.

On the evening of January 31, gangster Paramjit Singh opened fire on a police party in Miran Sahib as they attempted to arrest him. Singh was injured in the retaliatory fire and, along with his accomplice, was arrested. On February 1, two armed robbers stormed a jewellery shop in the Greater Kailash area of Jammu, taking the owner hostage before fleeing with 1.5 kg of gold. Despite police efforts, including raids and CCTV analysis, the robbers remain at large. The audacity of this crime has led to public criticism of the police's handling of law and order.

Two days later, on February 2, thieves targeted a grocery shop and made off with Rs 50,000 in cash and other goods during the early hours while the shop was closed.

Amidst these rising criminal activities, the police presented five accused in connection with the January 21 killing of a gangster near the high-security MA Stadium, where preparations for Republic Day were underway. The ongoing investigation into the case highlights the concerns over the effectiveness of law enforcement in the face of mounting criminal activities.

Meanwhile, J&K BJP general secretary and Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma has raised serious concerns over the rising crime rates in Jammu. He urged Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to take immediate action to ensure public safety. Sharma called for a discussion with the L-G on the current situation in Jammu, particularly regarding the increasing incidents of thefts, murders, and robberies.

He emphasised that the growing law and order problem is causing fear among residents and called for enhanced policing, stricter enforcement of laws, and initiatives to curb criminal activities in the region.
