The Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) was behind the attack on security forces in Sopore in which two cops and as many civilians were killed, J&K DGP Dilbag Singh said on Saturday.

Talking to reporters on the sidelines of a wreath-laying ceremony for the two slain police constables, Singh asserted that the perpetrators had been identified and would be brought to justice very soon. He said it was a Sopore police team on Covid duty that came under attack.

He said initial indicators have led to the identification of the outfit, and a follow-up on that is on. “The forces have launched an operation in the area, and we are hopeful that we will soon bring to justice the perpetrators of the crime... As per our information, LeT is involved in it, and we have almost identified the militants in the attack, but we will not share their details yet,” the DGP said.

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha tweeted that the perpetrators of the violence were the enemies of humanity and such a despicable and cowardly act would not go unpunished.

National Conference (NC) vice-president Omar Abdullah said such attacks must be condemned without reservation. “The government must ensure a stop to such brutal loss of lives” the NC said on its official Twitter handle.

The PDP tweeted that “our souls have been scarred for decades now by such wanton acts of violence”.

J&K Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) said the attack was a mindless and shameful act committed by the militants.

BJP’s J&K spokesman Altaf Thakur said terror had no place in Kashmir and the killing of innocents was a barbaric and cowardly act.

J&K People’s Conference (JKPC) chief Sajad Lone tweeted, “When will this madness end? Gun enslaves the very people that it purports to fight for. The gunmen really need to ponder whose war they are fighting.”

J&K Apni Party (JKAP) president Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari termed it most gruesome and heart wrenching. He said the senseless violence had ravaged all the sections of society. — PTI
