Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chief and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Tuesday demanded an explanation for the suspension of Dr Parvez Abdullah, an assistant professor at Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University (BGSBU) in Rajouri.

“The suspension of Dr Parvez Abdullah from Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University has escalated into a major issue with both teaching and non-teaching staff going on an indefinite strike in his support,” Mufti wrote on X. She added that the situation had become a serious concern, negatively impacting the academic environment and the overall educational system at the university.

“Moreover, many conspiracy theories are making rounds which threaten the very existence of this precious university. The administration must clarify the reasons behind his suspension and make them public,” Mufti urged, emphasising the need for “transparency and accountability to understand why such action was taken against the assistant professor”. Mufti tagged Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in her post on X.

BGSBU authorities, however, defended the decision, stating that the suspension followed proper procedure and was based on multiple complaints dating back to 2021. Vice-Chancellor Prof Jawaid Iqbal stressed that the suspension “was not arbitrary” but was necessary due to non-compliance with institutional norms.

Iqbal urged university employees to comply with institutional rules rather than resorting to pressure tactics, adding that the university’s progress should remain the top priority. “We are not against teachers; we want the university to progress, but compliance with norms is essential,” he said. The Vice-Chancellor further assured that a fair inquiry was underway and the individual concerned would be given an opportunity to present his case once the process is completed.
