GOI’s decision to stop the Durbar Move is penny wise and pound foolish. Its economic and social benefits outnumber expenses incurred for moving the capital during summer and winter.—Mehbooba Mufti, PDP chief

“GOI’s recent decision to stop the Durbar Move is penny wise and pound foolish. Its economic and social benefits outnumber expenses incurred for moving the capital during summer and winter. Quite obvious that such insensitive decisions are taken by those who least care for J&K’s welfare,” she wrote on Twitter.

The CPM also questioned the Union Government over ending the 149-year-old biannual Durbar Move in Jammu and Kashmir.

Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami, MLA in the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir, said the move to jettison the tradition of Durbar Move had created confusion amid the pandemic.

CPM questions too

Where will the Raj Bhawan function from? As and when elections are held in J&K, from where will the Assembly operate and the CM and his Council of Ministers work? —MY Tarigami, CPM leader

“Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha’s announcement that the administration has completely transitioned to an e-office, after which the 149-year-old biannual Durbar Move was no longer needed, has left several questions unanswered,” Tarigami said.

After the announcement, the administration on June 30 also asked Darbar Move employees in Jammu and Srinagar to vacate their accommodations. They have been given 21 days to vacate. “Where will the Chief Secretary, Director General of Police, administrative secretaries and other senior officers remain seated? If they work digitally, from where will they operate physically? If people have to meet any officer, where will they meet him or her? There is no clarity on this issue.”

“Where will the Raj Bhawan function from? As and when elections are held in J&K, from where will the Assembly operate and the Chief Minister and his Council of Ministers work?” he said.

Tarigami asked the government to come up with a proper plan and mechanism as to how it intended to operate the Civil Secretariat and its affiliated offices.
