Minister for Jal Shakti, Javed Ahmed Rana, has emphasised the need for proactive measures to ensure an uninterrupted drinking water supply during the summer months.

He made these remarks during a meeting with Chief Engineer, PHE, Jammu, Vikas Sharma, and other officials to deliberate on strategies for maintaining a reliable irrigation and water supply.

Rana discussed potential challenges in water supply and highlighted the necessary steps to mitigate shortages. He stressed that providing safe drinking water to the public should be a priority, urging concerned departments to prepare a comprehensive action plan.

The Minister instructed officials to formulate plans based on micro-level assessments. He also directed them to initiate repairs of borewells, wells, and motors, and to procure necessary materials in advance. Additionally, he called for improved coordination and synergy among departments to ensure the effective implementation of groundwater management interventions at the district level.

Regarding irrigation, Javed Rana emphasised the need for concrete steps to guarantee a continuous and reliable water supply, which is essential for successful crop yields and livelihoods. He also instructed officials to expedite the cleaning of channels and canals, as blockages have been a significant factor contributing to irrigation water shortages.

The Chief Engineer briefed the Minister on groundwater levels, reservoir capacities, and the projected water demand for the summer months. He assured that water supply is being closely monitored and that necessary steps are being taken to ensure continuous availability.

During the meeting, discussions also focused on water conservation and management through community participation and innovative strategies.

Javed Rana reiterated that community involvement is key to water conservation. He stressed that true water security can only be achieved when every citizen actively contributes to conservation efforts.
