Hurriyat Conference chairman and Jamia Masjid chief cleric Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Monday condemned the killings of youth in police firing during the survey of Sambhal Jama Masjid in Uttar Pradesh.

A statement by Mirwaiz said the killing of these youth in “discriminatory police action” is deeply distressing and sad.

He said while it is the duty of the government to safeguard the life and property of all, but in the present time “the life of minorities is cheap and dispensable and game for electoral rewards.”

Mirwaiz also said to rake up “issues of centuries old mosques and question their status has become a pattern to provoke and generate a desired reaction to the advantage of the ruling class.”

“The incident in Sambhal is part of this trend in which innocent lives were lost,” Mirwaiz said adding that this divisive mindset is dangerous for the people of India and should be stopped.

Mirwaiz said he hoped that the matter would be fairly investigated and the guilty punished.
