MLA's detention: Doda authorities ease curbs for two hours on Friday
Amid heightened security and ongoing prohibitory restrictions for the fourth consecutive day in Doda district on Friday, authorities allowed a two-hour relaxation period to enable residents to purchase essential commodities. The relaxation was given from 4 pm to 6 pm, amid an uneasy calm and apprehensions that protesters might take to the streets despite the restrictions.
Precautions were taken in anticipation of Friday prayers. On Thursday evening, the administration held a meeting with prominent citizens and informed them that restrictions on gatherings and movement would not be lifted for the prayers.
Police and municipal vehicles were seen in Doda making public announcements about the two-hour relaxation and urging shopkeepers dealing in essential commodities to open their establishments so people could buy ration and other necessary goods.
Restrictions were imposed in Doda under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNSS) on September 9, following violent clashes between security forces and protesters. The protests erupted after Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Mehraj Malik was arrested under the stringent Public Safety Act (PSA) for allegedly disturbing public order. Malik has since been lodged in Kathua jail.
Meanwhile, mobile internet and Wi-Fi services continued to remain suspended as a precautionary measure.
A senior administration official said the situation remained calm with no fresh protests reported on Friday. He added that tight security arrangements were made, especially in sensitive areas, in view of the Friday prayers. Security was beefed up and patrolling intensified in Doda town.
Deployment of forces was strengthened in Doda town, Bhaderwah, Gandoh, and Thathri. Concertina wires were placed near government offices to prevent protesters from reaching those areas.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Shridhar Patil, speaking on Thursday evening, assured the public that the situation was largely under control. “We want to tell the people of Chenab Valley that the situation is by and large under control. Efforts are on to bring back complete normalcy. We are moving towards that,” the DIG told reporters.
The Chief Education Officer of Doda announced that all schools in the district will remain closed until Sunday.
Earlier this week, Doda witnessed protests and violent clashes as demonstrators attempted to defy the restrictions. Security forces responded with baton charges at several locations. Several protesters were detained, though some have since been released.
