After getting an overwhelming response from players by organising an online chess event, the All J&K Chess Association (AJKCA) is set to conduct more such online sporting event in the ongoing lockdown amid the Covid-19 pandemic outbreak.
Giving details, Atul Kumar Gupta, AJKCA president, informed The Tribune that “the coronavirus pandemic had caused an unprecedented global crisis. In support of the governments and people around the world, the International Chess Federation (FIDE) had decided to promote an online international chess initiative”.
“The goal of the initiative is also to promote unity and solidarity during such challenging times. From May 18 to June 16, FIDE will join major Internet chess platforms in organising more than 2,000 online tournaments.
“CheckmateCoronavirus” tournaments will be played at lichess.org, chess.com, chess24.com, and FIDE Online Arena”, he added.
“Recently, we have experienced that despite 2G Internet more than 170 players participated in the online chess event, which is very encouraging. I am sure that in future events, the participation will further increase”, opined the AJKCA president.
“The J&K chess players have already proved their worth both at the national and international events and now it is a challenging task for them to exhibit their skills in the online chess tournaments”, he maintained.
