Motion tabled in UK Parliament reaffirming India’s sovereignty over J&K

A motion reaffirming Jammu and Kashmir’s accession to India and condemning terrorism in the region was tabled in the UK Parliament, coinciding with the observance of Jammu and Kashmir Accession Day on October 26.

Tabled by Conservative MP Bob Blackman, the motion acknowledged the 1947 Instrument of Accession signed by Maharaja Hari Singh and reaffirmed “the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of India over the State of Jammu and Kashmir".

The motion, co-signed by Democratic Unionist Party MP Jim Shannon, also expressed sympathy for victims of terror in the region, including those killed in the recent Pahalgam attack.

It further recognised the day’s significance for the Indian diaspora in the UK and encouraged peaceful commemorations promoting “historical literacy, cultural exchange, and civic participation".

Emphasising respect for international norms and sovereign boundaries, the motion urged constructive dialogue and community cohesion in discussions about Jammu and Kashmir.

This is not the first time British MPs have introduced similar motions supporting India’s sovereignty over Jammu and Kashmir. Blackman has been a consistent advocate of India’s position on the issue, often calling out cross-border terrorism and backing stronger UK-India ties.
