Mufti meets locals in Pahalgam, condemns ‘unjust’ crackdown
Former Chief Minister and PDP president Mehbooba Mufti on Monday called for a warm welcome from Pahalgam residents for the upcoming Amarnath Yatra, which is set to begin in July, stressing the region’s resilience and hospitality.
Mufti’s visit to Pahalgam came after last month’s terror attack, which claimed the lives of 26 people. During her visit, she met with the brave locals who risked their lives to protect and save tourists during the tragic incident. She also interacted with tourists currently in Pahalgam, assuring them of the region’s enduring hospitality and welcoming spirit.
Speaking to the media, Mufti stated that the gruesome terror attack in Pahalgam is condemnable and deserves the strongest punishment for those involved.
“The people of Kashmir unanimously condemned this brutal attack and we all stand against it. However, what is deeply disturbing is the manner in which local civilians, such as shawl vendors, Poniwalas, and tea sellers, who are simply trying to make a living, are being detained or questioned is deeply disturbing,” she said.
Mufti criticised the security agencies for rounding up locals, keeping them in custody for hours, sometimes without food, and repeatedly calling them back for questioning without any indication of wrongdoing. “This blanket criminalisation of locals is not only unjust but also breeds resentment and mistrust,” she remarked.
She also raised concerns over the tragic fate of some civilians who volunteered to assist with the investigation but were later labeled as “OGWs” (Over Ground Workers) and returned to their families in body bags. “These were poor men with no political or militant affiliations, just trying to cooperate in good faith. A full, transparent investigation must be launched immediately, and the government should provide financial support to their families who are already facing extreme poverty,” she added.
In light of the upcoming Amarnath Yatra, Mufti urged Union Home Minister Amit Shah to extend financial assistance to Ponywalas, who play an essential role in the pilgrimage. She also called for waiving the interest on loans taken by hoteliers, taxi operators, and other workers dependent on tourism.
“Their livelihoods have already suffered due to instability and the current crackdown and must not be made to pay the price. These sectors form the backbone of Pahalgam’s economy and have been reeling under immense stress due to repeated disruptions,” she said.
She urged the government to act with fairness and compassion, not fear and suspicion, given how Kashmiris have come out unanimously against the Pahalgam terror attack. “Collective punishment of innocent civilians is not how a democratic society responds to tragedy. Accountability and security are important, but we must also uphold the dignity of innocent civilians,” Mufti said.
