The National Conference (NC) on Thursday expressed optimism that the Central Government will restore statehood to Jammu and Kashmir during the upcoming Parliament session starting January 31.

Addressing mediapersons in Srinagar today, NC MLA and chief spokesperson of the party, Tanvir Sadiq, hoped that the Central Government will fulfil the long-pending demand of the people of J&K and grant statehood in the upcoming budget session.

When questioned if the frequent demonstrations in front of Chief Minister’s residence were a result of dual power system, Sadiq said that there was no doubt that the system had weakened the institutions and posed challenges for the government. He said that restoration of statehood was the only solution for the challenge.

“The dual power system is hindering the normal functioning of the government. This is why we are demanding that statehood should be restored so that people do not face problems. Then only we will be able to address the issues of unemployment, daily wagers and others,” he said.

“Confrontation with Centre is easy but we are hopeful that the Prime Minister and the Home Minister will come good on their commitment of restoration of statehood,” said Sadiq.
